About San Mateo: Homes for Sale

San Mateo is truly one of the most fantastic places to live in the country. It is surrounded by fresh air, miles of unspoiled beaches, open spaces, redwood forests, hiking and biking trails, and much more. There’s also the added benefit of the close proximity to the Silicon Valley and San Francisco which is only 20 minutes away. Residents enjoy ample natural beauty. The area is bordered by nearly 60 miles of Pacific coastline to the west, 30 miles of San Francisco Bay shoreline to the east, and then the Santa Cruz Mountains run along its center.

Outdoor enthusiasts can find much to enjoy. Portola Redwoods State Park has 18 miles of hiking trails and a campground. Año Nuevo State Park is the site of one of the biggest mainland breeding colonies for the northern elephant seal. The seals are such a popular attraction that early reservations are needed during the winter breeding season. Residents can also enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, surfing, and deep-sea fishing at the family-friendly beaches along Route 1.

In addition to the outdoors, residents can find plenty of entertainment through a variety of shopping and dining options. The Downtown is one of the most well-developed suburban downtowns in the San Francisco Bay Area. Downtown San Mateo contains over 800 shops and restaurants. Hillsdale Mall is another great spot. This is the largest mall in San Mateo County, and it features stores and restaurants like Aldo, Banana Republic, Macy’s, California Pizza Kitchen, Coach, Nordstrom.

This area is served by the San Mateo Foster City School District and the San Mateo Union High School District.  The three public high schools are San Mateo High School, Aragon High School, and Hillsdale High School. The real estate is comprised of family-friendly, community-oriented neighborhoods. Homes have exquisite craftsmanship, and there are both well-established and newer homes for sale. Home price ranges from $409,000 to $2,998,000.
